Purpose The Samaritans provide confidential support for the suicidal, despairing and those going through personal crises. They can be contacted 24 hours per day by phone or visited at the centre between 9am and 10pm. Samaritans are ordinary people who have the ability to listen patiently and non-judgementally to the feelings and emotions of the caller. The Samaritans hold regular information meetings for potential volunteers followed by preparation classes. Once accepted the normal commitment is 15 hours per 28 days, 6 of which should be unsocial hours. Full support is given at all times. There are limited facilities for the disabled.
