Purpose Common Threads is an arts organisation which brings together creativity, collections and communities.

Taking inspiration from the rich heritage in Derbyshire and the surrounding area, Common Threads offers workshops, exhibitions, community activities and creative opportunities.

Common Threads aims to inspire creativity and well-being, promote the physical, mental and social benefits which can be gained through creative practice.

Common Threads is run by a small group of artists, curators, makers and practitioners experienced in project management, facilitation and the support of vulnerable learners. We are passionate about the heritage of Derbyshire, particularly its textile heritage and its potential to inspire and engage.

Common Threads: Make & Mend

We currently deliver a programme of textile workshops at Derby Museum and residential mental health care settings in Derby which provide supportive, creative environments. Make & Mend works with people with mental health problems, people returning to the community after being resident in a mental health setting, people who are vulnerable to mental health problems, people who feel lonely, isolated, or have low self-esteem.
Working in both clinical settings and the community, the group provides a ‘bridge’ for people returning home after residential care. It also supports those at risk of requiring psychiatric intervention, preventing admission or readmission.
Currently Funded by the NHS Mental Health Trust, the Community Heath Foundation and supported by Derby Museums.

Common Threads: Drawing with Thread

An exhibition and workshop event, part of Belper Arts Trail 2016. The exhibition will showcase work completed through the ‘Make and Mend’ project and also include contemporary arts and craft responses exploring the lives of the women who worked in the textile industry in Derbyshire.
